Project details
Decorum is a series of paintings on paper that trace the global legacy of enslaved peoples, from antiquity to the present, as mediated by art historical or popular culture sources. Utilizing ornament as indicative of the aspirations of class and social status throughout a variety of cultures, my sources are frequently found in archive collections, where the archive acts as both witness and author. In considering the relationship between ornament and oppression, my inquiry comprises appropriation and historic archival research.
